Pedals for Progress
Pedals for Progress is a
simple, people-centered project that rescues bicycles destined for America's
landfills and puts them to productive use overseas. Beginning in 1991, this
simple but powerful idea has mobilized thousands of American volunteers to
collect and ship 50,000 used bicycles and $8 million in new spare parts and
accessories. Sending the products overseas, Pedals for Progress helps
low-income people earn more income, get to school, learn business management
and bike mechanic skills. With $7,000, Pedals for Progress will ship a 40-foot
container with 400 used bikes and new parts to the Fijian Cycling Federation.
They teach bike mechanics and safety skills to local youth - and together they
recondition the bikes.
Friends of Fiji
Friends of Fiji, an affiliate of the National Peace Corps Association, is dedicated to keeping former Fiji Peace Corps Volunteers and others interested in Fiji in touch with each other and informed about the current state of affairs in Fiji. A quarterly newsletter and continued involvement in support of worthy projects in Fiji accomplish this goal. Previous fund raisers have provided financial support for Nursing Scholarships in honor of former Peace Corps Medical Officer Wainiu Caginiliwalala; to Fiji's Housing and Assistance Relief Trust (HART); KANA, a small organization working to seek self-sufficiency for schools in food and energy sources; and Habitat for Humanity Fiji. This year's project's goal is to raise $7,000 for Pedals for Progress.
